OpenVLAN on QNAP NAS

Install on your QNAP, reach it — and everything behind it — from anywhere. The homelab classic.

Why QNAP users do this

📦

No port forwarding

The NAS dials out; nothing listens on your home IP. Instant Port Mapper exploits: closed by default.

🔀

Whole-LAN subnet router

Advertise 192.168.x.0/24 and your laptop reaches the printer, the cameras, and the Pi cluster as if at home.

📁

Taildrop target

Send files from your phone straight to the NAS over the mesh — no cloud middle step.

Install

Install the QPKG

From App Center → browse the OpenVLAN package, or sideload the latest QPKG from the downloads page.

Open the OpenVLAN app on the NAS and authenticate with the same identity as your other devices.

Advertise your LAN (optional)

Enable "advertise routes" in the app settings and enter your LAN range (e.g. 192.168.1.0/24). Approve the route in the admin console.

Done

From anywhere: ssh admin@nas or https://nas:5000 — over the mesh, encrypted.

Supported models

x86-based NAS

Full-featured client including subnet routing and exit node advertisement. Most TS-x70/x77/x82/x88 series and newer.

ARM-based NAS

Client connectivity and Taildrop; subnet routing depends on model kernel support — check the community list.
